David Zabriskie is one of the Worlds most popular cyclists not only for his race results, but also for his multifaceted ventures and his off-the-wall personality. Dave has posited himself as one of the best time trialists in the World. In 2005, David beat out Lance Armstrong in the prologue of the Tour de France to wear the highly coveted Yellow Jersey. During that race, David also set a record for the fastest Individual time trial in Tour de France history. David is the only American to win stages in all three of the European Grand Tours: the Giro de Italia, the Tour de France, and the Vuelta Espana. David has podium finished multiple times at the World Time Trial Championships and is the reigning and five time National Time Trial Champion. In 2009, David proved he could be a general classification rider as well in one of his best seasons to date. Dave not only won second place overall in the very popular Tour of California, but he went on to podium finish in most of his subsequent races that year. He won his fifth National Time Trial Championships and then finished the season winning the overall general classification in the Tour of Missouri stage race. Dave looks forward to continuing on with Team Garmin Transitions in 2010 and has decided to extend his contract until 2013 as he feels this team is where he can best maximize his talent.
David’s career has not been without set backs. David has been hit by cars four times – the last of which nearly ended his career. In May of 2003 David was descending a canyon in Salt Lake City Utah when an SUV made a left hand turn directly into him. The accident left David in a wheelchair for months. Slowly he was able to graduate to a walker and then, through much rehabilitation and determination, he walked, and eventually, rode his bike again. As a result of his accidents, and the countless cyclists injured — and worse yet killed — by motorists, David started a non-profit organization in 2007 called Yield to Life. David felt Yield to Life signaled a new approach to address growing tensions between motorists and cyclists. Yield to Life addresses the issue of drivers being not only unaware, but removed or desensitized from the fragility of cyclists’ life often in their hands. Dave has grown Yield to Life into a national and international grass roots movement to create large scale changes in perceptions and improve relations between motorists and cyclists worldwide.
Cycling safety is not the only issue David has combated. After struggling with his own chamois issues and writing popular main-taint-enance articles, Dave decided to fulfill a long standing dream to create the world’s best chamois cream. In 2008, he did just that when he launched DZNUTS – a premium chamois cream company making specially formulated chamois creams for men, and through popular demand has expanded to a woman’s line, DZNUTS Bliss. DZNUTS is very popular with pros and non-pros alike. DZNUTS is currently sponsoring Team Garmin Transitions, Columbia-HTC and Woman’s Pro Teams Peanut butter Co. and Project Twenty-12. When David is not working on his professional ventures, he enjoys Super Heroes, comic books, mountain biking, and spending time with his family.
