Today I went out training and ran into Pete Stetina. I like this kid. But the roads here are wet, icy, and snowy and Pete slipped out on some ice and we parted ways soon after that. We have endured a rare snowstorm here. This part of Spain has not seen snow like this in 40 years. The blizzards have created a mess everywhere – I’ve never seen so many uprooted trees and downed power lines. City Services cleared the downed trees off the roads, but to dispose of them they put them in big piles to burn them – a questionable bonus for the already poor air quality. The cold weather seems to be trapping in all the diesel fumes causing quite an inversion.
Out on my ride today, I also noticed that there are quite a few supermarkets without power and they have huge gas powered generators in the parking lot spewing more pollution into the air. It’s hard not to be annoyed by the smell of smoke in the air. Suddenly, I found myself behind a scooter spewing out fumes in my face. I couldn’t take it and finally turned to ride up a different road. Trying to further distance myself from him I took a few minute break and ate a Clif bar. But once I got going the same scooter pulled out right in front of me again – the scooter from hell. I finally got away from him. It was the cold though that eventually got to me. I went home to finish the workout on the trainer. But when I got on the trainer it just wasn’t happening. I was done for the day and a little annoyed that I didn’t get in the full 5 hours. I cleaned my bike in the shower…. Watched Paris-Nice on Eurosport… Took my son and wife to the park, but we didn’t stay long because of the cold. Tomorrow’s a new day.
