The first get together of the newly merged Garmin Cervelo team is finished. It took place in the Grand Cayman islands.  Upon arrival everyone got a bracelet attached to their wrist so that they could get free alcohol from the hotel. I had to tear mine off the first night in bed it kept bothering me while I was trying to sleep. My roommate for this camp is the new world champion Thor. I heard putting us together was a special request on his part. We had been at the same hotel in Australia and he said he thought we’d be good in the room together so that’s what happened. We weren’t in the room a whole lot at this camp but he is a nice guy, should be an exciting year having him as a teammate. Also upon arrival and throughout the rest of the week people would give me a crazy look and say ‘I heard you’re a vegan, are you crazy?’ I also heard “life is supposed to be fun. Why are you trying to make it so hard on yourself”. The team did call ahead to the restaurants we were eating at to tell them I was looking to eat a vegan meal and they all were very nice and cooked up a little something special for me. The biggest concerns for them about me seem to be, how are you going to get protein and Iron. I’ve never paid as much attention to those things as I do now. I probably get more protein and iron now than I did when I was eating meat.Â
One of the first team outings we did was go out on a boat to Stingray city. There were stingrays all over the place and it seemed rather safe but at the same time not. I’m not the biggest water fan, mix that with an animal that can kill you, well I just wasn’t that into it. But it was quite beautiful. The water is super clear and warm, it’s like the ocean is a big heated swimming pool there. Another day we went on a treasure hunt that didn’t make much sense. We broke up into teams of 3-4 people and took off in individual cars and went looking for spots on the island where there were plastic bags with words in the bags. We collected the words and that was it, we never went over them or anything. We were also told when we came to camp to bring a picture of ourself as a child and that we would have to share something with everyone about the photo, but that never happened. Feel kind of bad I put the pressure on my mom to find the pictures and go to Kinko’s to scan them in and then mail them to me for no reason. Sorry mom. Ok after the treasure hunt we were supposed to go on a helicopter ride but we were with the team doc and we got called back to the hotel because somebody thought they were dying. They turned out to be ok. We met back up and took off for the airport to get on the chopper. My last helicopter ride was at the TDF a couple years ago and it scared the shit out of me. When we pulled up to the chopper JV and some other peeps were getting off and they looked at me and said have fun Dave. The pilot was French and he did some pretty crazy stunts. He was surely trying to push the limits of that bird. There was a few feelings of no gravity but I had a good time.
While on the treasure hunt I pulled the keys out of another teams jeep and pretended I was going to throw them. The driver of the Jeep is a cop on the island so he wanted to prank me. On the way to some car museum we got pulled over. The cops were being pretty in your face. They got us out of the truck and asked us some questions. Then one of them goes to where I was sitting in the bus and pulls out a knife, and says who’s is this. Everyone says it’s not mine.  He looks at me and says it’s where you were sitting. I was thinking, oh shit these guys are going to set me up. I tried to hide my hands in case he tried to hand it to me and get my prints on it. I said take it to the lab. Then the tension broke. They started laughing and said, ‘welcome to the island enjoy yourself.’Â
Now, back to the car museum. I had no idea what we were doing. I walked in and turned the corner and there was the original Batmobile from the old T.V. series. I started freaking out. I couldn’t believe it. The owner let me get inside of it. It was impossible was to hide my excitement. I’d say that was for sure the highlight of my trip. I was writing a big heartfelt thank you in the guestbook of the museum when a drunk bike rider took the pen and scribbled all over it. I tore out the page, kind of ruined the moment and I wasn’t too happy with the person.Â
Going home with two new bikes! I spent a good amount of time perfecting my position and the person that helped me last year said I’m not nearly as twisted as I was last year. That’s exciting for me. If I get the legs working correctly it makes things so much easier for me on the bike. The rest of the time on the island pretty much just blurred together. It was good to see everyone again. Departing from Grand Cayman today and it’s been a very nice time but it’ll also be good to get back to the family. There’s not that much time left at home before the big Europe trip.Â
