Yes it’s true the racing season of 2010 has come to an end. Off-season is now underway. It doesn’t matter if it was a great season or a bad season, I always spend this time trying to get better prepared for the next one. The time has come to make some major changes.

Hi Dave, are you vegan normally? Are there any vegos/vegans on tour with you guys or in the other teams in the peloton? Good luck for next year!
Amy – No I’m not. It’s been a gradual move for me and now I’m ready to live this way the rest of my life. Not sure if there are others on tour. Thanks.
Welcome to the club, Dave. Check out the awesome cookbook Vegan with a Vengeance if you haven’t already.
perhaps one more Hello Dave??? lol
Hello SLO GranFondo….next week on Oct. 23rd? (:
Marc (maybe) and I will be in attendance and riding as well.
Looking forward to procuring YTL info from u to hand out to all the riders the day prior to the event.
Regards
it has been AMAZINGGG seeing you race all season Z-Man…your comedic sense of humor and unforgettable blogs have made it all that much more interesting and fun. Enjoy your off time and I can’t wait for a kick ass 2011 season!
Hey Dave,
Enjoy your rest, if you can really call the off season a rest. I live in Belgium (but from Jersey, USA) and am wondering if you’ve decided on which races you’ll do in 2011. Hopefully you’ll come to Belgium! I just found your website so will bookmark it to keep track of you when the season starts up.
Good luck in the future!
Mike – Next year’s schedule is still in the works, but I’ll post it here on this site when I know…
Do you have a recipe for a vegan version of the “famous” Rice cake.
Thanks
Hey Dave,
Will next year’s schedule include the Ultimate Challenge in Utah again? I sure hope so! Would be good to see DZNUTS in person!
Huge fan!
Bryan Gee
Enjoy your time with the babies! They can be entertaining, irritating, and inspiring all at once. Have fun!
Dave,
You have set the Mostache bar so high, that it sounds silly to say this to you, but it is MOvember..
Anyway, enjoy your time with family during the “off-season”. The US Pros in Greenville were not the same without you…check out my buddy and I who were there: Youtube: Elvis @ US Pros… VERY funny!!
Being a vegan triathlete (cyclist) is a blast. Extremely healthy and full of adventurous challenges. Eating super clean like that showed me exactly what foods made me feel awesome and which don’t.
Have a fun off-season and can’t wait to see you race next year!
Oh, almost forgot – Ultraman Rich Roll has a great vegan cookbook that just came out. Perfect for high-performance needs.
I know you have already been in contact with @bikeswarm. They’re a good bunch, really helped me with the vegan cycling, plus they love doing things that sound ridiculous.
Way to go, Dave, choosing vegan life style! You are joining many great champions like six time world triathlon Ironman champion Dave Scott, ultra marathon champion and record holder, Scott Jurek, and now it will be great to have one of the best pro cyclists to represent as well!
Just in case you don’t know yet, Brendan Brazier, a professional Ironman triathlete and ultra marathon runner, has written a book on plant based diet for athletes and developed a great line of products for vegan athletes – VEGA. (http://www.brendanbrazier.com/)
Good luck with winning stages and races next year!
Awesome to hear about the vegan deal! We have a vegan restaurant with a 25 strong cycling team here in Portland Oregon. The restaurant is Portobello vegan Trattoria, and the team is Portobello Bicycle Racing. YOU, my fine friend, are due one free meal courtesy of me. Next time you are in Portland, come on in and we’ll treat you right.
Good choice Dave
It’s always great meeting and reading about other road cyclists who are vegan. I loved that DZNUTs creme already came clearly stated as being vegan. There’s a ton of gels and bars out there that are ‘accidentally vegan’; hopefully your team chef and soigneur are down with helping out. If you’re in Philly, there’s a fair few (low cat) racers, including myself, who are vegan and can suggest some great places to eat etc if you’re in the area.
PS. It was fun trying to explain to the French/European fans what DZNUTS meant after we painted it on the road of the final 2kms of the Tourmalet this year. In the end they needed a demonstation of what deeznuts were.
Hi Dave,
Will becoming Vegan cause any problems for the chef for the team or are there other teammates that eat the same way?
Thanks for racing and taking questions!
Dave,
It was great seeing you the other day MTB riding near Newbury Park. Hope to see you out there again. If you ever want to go out and explore more trails send me an email and I would love to go out riding with you. Hope you and your family had a nice halloween. My brother is also a vegan.
i heard you moved to my friends hood, you met sammy, right?
haha i need to get autographs from you on garmin jersey..
Dave,
Ain’t you ever heard of bacon?
Dave, nice riding with you today in Malibu for Andreas Knickman… that ride sure kicked, and kicked again.
Dave, welcome the growing group of athletes drawn to being vegan. We have hundreds of athletes sharing the life at organicathlete. The site is a great place to share ideas for food and fun.
Hi Dave, so what made you switch to being a vegan? I recall reading an article last year that Garmin did a whole bunch of tests and found that you were allergic to a lot of foods, is this correct, or just my mind playing games with me?
Thanks
I’ve been a vegan since 1988. It’s a great way to eat and far more socially responsible than supporting the meat and dairy industry.
Congratulations on veganizing and, of course, the season.
I look forward to next season!
Well done on going vegan Dave, we’re getting everywhere! I am confident it will serve you well and boost an already amazing performance.
Loads of vegan sportpeople meet up at http://www.veganfitness.net and you’d be welcome there.
Damn runner – Thanks for the info I will check it out for sure.
DZ.. fantastic 2010 season. Its always refreshing to read or listen to your interviews. Enjoy your off season. Oh, if you could be any superhero or villian, who would it be?
the V will be represented on the podium this year!!!
Thank you , I enjoy reading about other vegetarians as it gives me the strength to continue. I have about a thousand vegetarian feeds in my google reader, but another can’t hurt!! I did manage to find a good lentil recipe here, but I’ll be sure to try yours too. Thanks!
I am so excited that you are choosing a vegan lifestyle. I am vegan now 10 yrs, vegetarian for 20 and a pro female cyclist (now mainly cyclocross) so naturally i am thrilled by your choice.
As for me, i will never go back to eating animals – for the animals’ sake as well as for my personal health.
Grtz from belgium.
Hey Dave, way to go on the vegan change. Check out our cycling team! http://www.animalliberationracing.com and our FB page . We are also based here in Salt Lake City, but have riders world wide, also rode with you back in the day of einstein beagles and brackman bros! Small world.
Thanks Dave, I add you to this list:

Sujal – Much thanks…now that’s one list I’m happy to be on…
Dave,
Now that you are Vegan, will you make In Heat a Vegan embro? Only 2 others on the market.
Lily – Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into the possibilities.
You da man! Go vegan and no one gets hurt.
Hi Dave, always a fan and now especially so! We live about 50m from the feed zone at the 2010 WC in Geelong, Australia. Had we known that such a fine vegan was riding past we would have raided our garden and made you up one hell of a meal. Heres to an awesome 2011 for you and the “new” team.
DZ, super cool you made the Vegan plunge. I’ve been doing it for 6 months and feel great. Started with some solid research (e.g., Eating Animals, by J. Safran Foer), a little inspiration by folks like Rich Roll and you, and just an overall good feeling physically. I rode with you in the Tour of the Bahamas a few years ago and chatted about a screenplay idea. Kick ass this year.
It’s brilliant that you’re vegan, Dave. If you’re ever looking for vegan restaurants in the LA area, have a look at http://www.quarrygirl.com/. Plenty of chances there to ruin your form by indulging in decadent vegan meals.
Good luck for the Tour!
Vegan!!!!!
Cool, very encouraging. I am a 59 year old vegan. I typically cycle 10,000-13,000 miles per year. Not this year though. I broke my femur in a cycling accident July 8th. Everyone is amazed how quickly I am recovering.
Good Work Dave
