Yesterday was the last long road stage of the TDF. Long it was. I had to change the data screens on my Garmin because the km’s were passing by so slow. It was just a straight road in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere and the road surface was chip seal and it just rattled the bones all day long. Eventually it all came to the line together and Julian Dean pulled off an impressive second place for the team while Cavendish won the race. Apparently Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were at the finish, I did not see them but hey I heard about it so it’s obviously true.
Once back at hotel I just hit the bed. I didn’t open my suitcase until the next morning as I was super tired. In years past I usually get a doping control before a TT so I was up early anticipating a knock on the door. Then it came, but they were here for Ryder, which was fine with me. He wasn’t too happy as they had just done the same thing the morning before.
Today was the ITT. I was pretty motivated to do well. It seemed as though I was getting better and better as the race went on. I felt good warming up and was hoping for the win. After 3 weeks of racing coming out of the blocks the sensations weren’t that great. It took a long time to get it going and I actually don’t think that moment ever came. It was a fight most of the way as 52km’s is a long way by yourself. I could see the time splits as I was coming through and it seemed like I was doing very badly. My whole body was just tight everywhere. I gave up quite a few times, I think, but then I would get rolling again or J.V would say something on the radio and I would snap back into it.
I was so wasted when it was over I couldn’t lift my leg over the bike to get off of the thing. I ended up 5th on the day which isn’t bad but it isn’t really what I wanted. Oh well, very happy to have it over with as it was super painful. Tomorrow is the last day and it’s only 100kms. Finally, a short last day. It’s always pretty coming into Paris for the finish as the crowds are impressive there. Also rolling in I always remember proposing to my wife there in 2005. Then a big party for the team hosted by POM. Monday morning Dave Z. goes back to the U.S.A. and things really get busy as I am having my second child. Peace.
