Today is the first rest day of the TDF. I woke up expecting a nice plate of crispy hash browns but our chef forgot to make them. I’m pretty sure he was up late with everyone else going crazy about the World Cup match. I watched a little of the game myself, people really get into it.
I decided not to ride today. I have never not ridden on the rest day at a grand tour but with the way my body has been acting I decided I would just go on a little walk in the town we are staying. I met up with Robbie Hunter and we strolled around for a bit. It’s like a little mountain top theme park, and there is all kinds of stuff going on up here. We found some pretty cool trampolines and I talked the guy that was working there into letting me have a couple minutes of fun, and fun it was. Had potato salad for lunch, so I guess that can replace the hash browns.
It was a hectic first week of the Tour. Stage 2 turned into a huge mess with riders falling down all over the place, due mainly to oil on the wet road from a prior motorcycle crash. CVV had to abandon the race because of his crash, and Tyler fractured his arm, JD hurt his back, Millar broke some ribs, and Robbie had some abrasions. Not a good situation for us. I can’t wait for electric motor bikes and cars to make their way into the caravan. No oil spills and no fumes to inhale as they pass by.
100 km into stage 2 my knee exploded with pain. Stage 3 was the cobble stone day. It was a super nice day until the last 50 km when it did get pretty nasty. Those cobbles are ridiculous to ride on. Ryder got in an early break and was the only one to survive the cobbles until the leaders caught him. He got the most aggressive rider on the day and it put him in a good position for the overall GC. He has been hanging tough ever since. Stages 4, 5, and 6 were a lot easier and it’s a good thing too or I’m not sure I would still be in the race. My knee got worse and I could barely pedal at times. I think it is getting better now and I’m hoping to have a better time of it the rest of the way. The staff we have here have been really great at trying to fix my body up.
I sure hope the weather cools off a bit over here. It’s hot!
