Yesterday the stage finished with a steep grade that was almost 2km long, I believe. We got to see it before the final because we were doing a circuit, which seems to be the way things are here. The last time up that climb was very hard. Frank Schleck put in a good attack and won the stage. I almost made it to a good group of guys but my body blew up on me and I lost 19 seconds. The best thing about the stage was the weather. It was supposed to rain on us for sure. I talked to Fabian before the start and he said we might get lucky. We got lucky, and as soon as we were finished it started dumping. I went to bed as early as I could.
Today could of been a big breakaway but we got lucky again and the bunch sat up after only one rider escaped. No rain, but a strong headwind for most of the day. I really needed the easy day, and I’m feeling much better now. The group was getting super nervous with more than 50km to go. I had a pretty good feeling that the 3km crash rule would be happening today, the way everyone was riding. I think because most of the day was easy, there were too many fresh guys for the final and that made for some stressful bike racing. The crash happened right before the finish line and it’s one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen. We couldn’t pass the carnage to cross the line so we just inched up little by little looking at all the fallen riders and the damaged equipment, until we finally finished the race. It was nasty. My room mate Ryder went down also and has a big lump on his elbow and some road rash. The stages have been starting so late that we are not getting to the hotels and until quite late. Tonight, I just skipped my massage and had dinner. This isn’t a bad place though, it’s got super fast Internet, so I downloaded the rest of the episodes of Justified.
